We're hiring! The Detroit Sports Commission is looking for a passionate and innovative, self-starter to join our team as an Event Coordinator. The Event Coordinator is responsible for event management support for DSC hosted and owned events and delivering departmental administrative, clerical and sales support and staffing for special projects. The Detroit Sports Commission is a wholly owned subsidiary of Visit Detroit, the world’s first destination marketing organization that has been telling Detroit's story for over 125 years.

Provides event management support for Detroit Sports Commission hosted and owned events and delivers departmental administrative, clerical and sales support and staffing for special projects. This position interacts with internal staff, clients and prospective clients, vendors, members, and volunteers.
Provide event support duties at the direction of Sr. Event Manager as assigned.
Provide support for volunteer efforts as required.
Work on-site at event to support staffing and client needs as assigned.
Enter leads into the system and follow-up with hotels/partners to ensure timely responses to RFPs.
Assist in creating proposals, bids, sales presentations and providing research as requested.
Organize site inspections with Sr. Event Manager and Deputy Director and participate in site tours as requested.
Communicate and follow up with partners as required.
Assist in responding to requests for information and assistance from both staff and outside constituents to fulfill annual and strategic sales goals.
Assist in various activities including maintenance of databases, distribution of leads, correspondence, staffing needs for special projects, preparation of bid books, site inspections, special events, and other necessary staff support functions.
Participate in weekly DSC staff meetings.
Navigate CRM and Empowermint data bases with intermediate level proficiency.
Proofreading, formatting and preparing correspondence.
Assist in copying and print jobs for signage and related needs.
Assemble packages for event participants, organizers, attendees and others as needed.
Provide overall support to Detroit Sports Commission.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics Required:
Working knowledge of the hospitality and sports event industry, knowledge of area hotels/motels, and of regional sports facilities.
Self-motivated individual with the ability to work independently in a changing environment with limited direction.
Ability to maintain a positive courteous and professional work attitude and working relationship with peers, colleagues and customers.
Skill in organizing, prioritizing and analyzing assignments.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills including the ability to clearly express complex thoughts, ideas and concepts in the English language.
Ability to communicate and interact effectively over the telephone and in person with tact and patience.
Ability to coordinate multiple clerical tasks as well as play a supporting role throughout the sales process when needed.
Maintain dependable, consistent and acceptable attendance based on a 5-day, 40-hour work week.
Availability to work overtime when required.
Proficiency in in basic business math applications and intermediate to advanced personal computer software including spreadsheet, word processing and presentation software.
Ability to perform essential functions that typically involve reading text on a video display monitor and using a keyboard for extended periods of time.
Bachelor’s degree and/or commensurate experience.
One year experience in event support or event coordinator role with college athletic department, sports team, governing body, or similar organization.
Valid, unrestricted Michigan driver license.
Proficiency in personal computer software applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point).
Ability to speak English and communicate clearly and concisely both in writing and verbally.
1-3 years’ experience working in an event coordinator role within an organization.
Relationships and/or knowledge of sports facilities and local sports organizations.
Prior working experience in the Travel/Tourism/Hospitality industry.
Familiarity with the hospitality industry, the Detroit metro area and Detroit metro tourism attractions.
