Under the supervision of the Director of Admissions, the Admissions Counselor will be
responsible for all recruiting activities in an assigned territory, including school visits, college fairs,
and on-campus events, as well as communication with students and parents. The Admissions
Counselor is also responsible for developing strong working relationships with high school
counselors, college access organizations, and other key stakeholders in their assigned territory.
In collaboration with the Director of Admission, the Admissions Counselor will develop a recruiting
plan for their territory and will be responsible for meeting the application and enrollment goals
stated in that plan.
Build and strengthen relationships with primary feeder schools to increase application volume
and yield. Prepare and deliver presentations to prospective students, parents, and other key
stakeholders. Develop new markets to broaden the qualified applicant pool from the assigned
territory. Represent UM - Flint at college fairs, school visits, and community and alumni functions.
Support the University’s mission of building an academically excellent and diverse educational
community. Coordinate visitation and travel to high volume/high yielding high schools. Exercise
significant discretion and independent judgment in developing and modifying a travel schedule,
within an assigned territory, to meet the University’s enrollment goals. Build and strengthen
relationships with primary feeder schools to increase yield.
Advise students and parents on the admissions process, educational opportunities, and
academic requirements at UM - Flint. Interpret university admissions policies and procedures.
Provide liaison services to other UM - Flint offices including Financial Aid, Housing & Residential
Life, the Student Success Center, the Promise Scholar Program, and the university’s schools and
colleges. Represent UM - Flint’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions at professional meetings
and regional workshops. Conduct extensive communication with students, parents, secondary
students, school officials and other stakeholders by explaining admissions decisions, including
rejections.
Evaluate applications holistically for domestic freshman students using UM Flint’s individualized,
holistic, and comprehensive application evaluation guidelines. Recommend appropriate
admissions actions in a timely manner. Work with the Admissions Processing team to support
process and document flow. Make consistent recommendations abiding by UM Flint and specific
school/college guidelines.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
One or more years of experience in higher education, sales, marketing, or another field related to
recruiting.
Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Proven ability to operate independently and make independent decisions.
